Whilst I was at secondary school I had the incredible opportunity to go on a two week trip to Ghana to see our link school.
This was my first experience of travelling abroad, I had never been on a plane prior and honestly I was terrified, it was 2 hours over to Portugal before a link flight to Accra, Ghana.
Ghana is an incredible country, there's lots of nature and the culture is so different from anything from what I had experienced before.
We stayed in a large house on the site of the primary and secondary school, surprisingly it seemed fairly similar to a British house. The only main differences were that there was no running water, this made showering and staying clean a lot more interesting. The house had a complete bathroom including a bath, toilet and sink which was really surprising, it just had no running water so flushing the toilet we had to tip a bucket of water down it and showering was again just using a bucket. The house had intermittent electricity which meant we were able to have a small fridge and even a television. We just had to be incredibly careful with the fridge when the power went out!

Going to collect water |
Daily we went to the local secondary school in Akropong where we taught English, attempted to participate in Twi which is their local language and we also taught them lots of different sports and games that they had never experienced.

Teaching the Hokey Cokey |
We learnt that schooling is completely different in Ghana and the students pride themselves on the school. Every morning the students would arrive, before any lessons took place they would sweep and clean the entire school before starting any subjects.

During our visit we also went on multiple day trips to a variety of locations throughout the region, visiting a fruit factory, Akasombo Dam, primary schools and churches.

It was an incredible experience at 15 years old, I learnt to not take things for granted and how lucky I am to be living in the UK. I would love to go back one day.
Until we meet again,
